What is Pink Noise?
Pink noise falls between white and brown noise on the frequency spectrum. It has equal energy per octave, meaning lower frequencies have more power — but not as much as brown noise. The result is a balanced sound that many describe as more natural and soothing than white noise.
Pink noise is found throughout nature: rainfall, rustling leaves, ocean waves, and heartbeats all exhibit pink noise characteristics. This may explain why it feels so inherently relaxing to the human ear.
Crucially, pink noise has been studied specifically for its effects on deep (slow-wave) sleep. A 2017 study in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience found that pink noise synchronized with slow brain oscillations during sleep led to significantly better memory consolidation and recall the following day.
