What is Grey Noise?

Grey noise is white noise that has been shaped to account for the way human hearing actually works. Our ears are not equally sensitive to all frequencies — we hear mid-range frequencies (speech range) much more clearly than very high or very low ones.

White noise, when played flat, therefore sounds "brighter" in the mid-range than it should. Grey noise corrects for this using the inverse of the ISO 226 equal-loudness contour, so every frequency is perceived at equal loudness. The result is the most balanced, least fatiguing noise for extended listening sessions.

If you find white noise harsh or brown noise too heavy, grey noise is often the Goldilocks option — particularly for all-day background listening in work or study environments.

Benefits of Grey Noise

  • Most comfortable for all-day listening
  • Calibrated to human hearing — no harsh frequencies
  • Excellent for open-plan office noise masking
  • Ideal for those who find white noise too bright
  • Balanced masking across all frequency ranges

Frequently asked questions

Grey noise is white noise adjusted for human hearing perception. Our ears don't hear all frequencies equally, so grey noise applies an inverse equal-loudness curve — making it sound consistent across all frequencies rather than harsh in the mid-range.
